A comparision between Apple iPhone and Blackberry

Apple iPhone Vs Blackberry

Apple iPhone Vs Blackberry

Smart Phones

market really heating up, business folks around the country will be faced with the decision of switching to the trendy new iPhone or upgrading to the iPhone. To determine whether the grass really is greener on the iPhone side of the fence, the article chronicles the experience of a venture capitalist (who wishes to remain anonymous) who has been using an iPhone and a BlackBerry 8800 side-by-side for the past few weeks. His conclusion: despite the overall attractiveness of the iPhone, it lacks too many vital features to replace the BlackBerry as the corporate weapon of choice.

For starters, a BlackBerry set up with Microsoft Exchange Server sports intelligent push email while the iPhone does not. When an email is sent to an account on a BlackBerry, the message is downloaded immediately and an LED on the phone notifies the user that he or she has a new message. The iPhone, on the other hand, recognizes new messages at most every 15 minutes and must be checked actively to see if anything has arrived. This deficiency makes handling email on the iPhone slower and less efficient; it also translates into wasted battery power as users need to perform the extra step of opening the iPhone’s email program every time they want to check for new mail.

Perhaps even more significantly, the iPhone fails to synchronize as well as the BlackBerry. When a BlackBerry user changes a calendar event or some contact information on his or her desktop computer in Exchange, the changes automatically appear on the BlackBerry. This makes keeping track of basic business information a snap because one never has to worry about acting on outdated data or manually updating one’s handheld. In contrast, the iPhone does not synchronize calendar and contact information wirelessly, which makes it less dependable for information ultimately stored on a server.

In addition to these major drawbacks of the iPhone, our venture capitalist cites the following as reasons to prefer the BlackBerry:

* The BlackBerry 8800 possesses GPS, which makes Google Maps much more useful, especially for turn-by-turn directions
* The iPhone lacks basic cut and paste capabilities
* Despite Apple’s reputation for superior user interface design, the BlackBerry possesses keyboard shortcuts that make navigation around and between applications a breeze
* The BlackBerry’s phone quality is better than the iPhone’s
* The Safari browser is certainly more stunning than the BlackBerry’s primitive browser, but the iPhone seems to load even text-only pages more slowly than the BlackBerry over the EDGE network
* The BlackBerry possesses a general contacts application that makes contacting people by any given method more convenient
* The battery runs out faster on the iPhone simply because it is used for more tasks. This makes it less reliable for when one must take the device somewhere overnight without the opportunity to recharge.

Despite all of these criticisms of the iPhone, our venture capitalist admits that he would switch over to the iPhone if only it supported push email, calendar and contacts synchronization, and GPS. For him, the prospect of ridding his pockets of a separate device for music (an iPod nano), as well as enjoying all of the iPhone’s slick features (such as full-featured web browsing, stocks and weather apps, and its YouTube program), makes the iPhone very tempting. However, until Apple resolves these shortcomings (and perhaps Google makes its applications, especially Gmail, work as seamlessly with the iPhone as Microsoft makes Exchange work with the BlackBerry), others are going to have to pry his BlackBerry from his cold, dead hands (his words, mind you, not ours).

Reliablity Score
As per a study conducted by Square Trade, a mobile phone warranty firm, BlackBerry cellphones had twice the malfunction rate than the iPhone in the first year use. Square Trade had released a study of 15,000 individual handsets covered under the company's policies.

From the study, it was found that Treo had the worst failure rate of 16.2 per cent in the first 12 months of usage. BlackBerry phones showed up 11.9 per cent failure rate while iPhone's malfunction rate was 5.6 per cent. Canalys research report mentioned that Apple cruised ahead of RIM.

Apple's iPhone reported majority of problems with touchscreen and battery. Even the glossy and smooth outer made it difficult to handle and slip out. Battery issues of around 1 percent reported for BlackBerry and Treo compared to half percent of iPhone. To be noted, SquareTrade's study didn't have software issues fixed by firmware updates under their scanner.

SquareTrade projected that iPhone's failure rate might become nine to 11 percent in next two years, which are estimated figures since the phone hasn't been there for long. While Blackberry and Treo hand sets got projected failure rate of 14.3 percent and 21 percent respective.

What I love about Airtel Blackberry 8520 !

Blackberry 8520 Smart Phone

I tried Blackberry 8520 I really liked it. The finish is not as great as Blackberry 8900, but it is only for 16K. I am trying to find if I can get it for less. Here is a comparison between the two:

The best thing I like about 8520 is the trackpad (just like the trackpad on the laptop). It is better than a track-wheel. My hands get sweaty and greasy and makes trackball difficult to use at times. Over a period of time dirt/lint also tends to find its way inside the trackwheel compartment and has to be opened for cleaning. The trackpad is so responsive! All new BlackBerry Phones from now on will have the trackpad. The difference between Curve 8520 Vs Curve 8900:-

Camera: 2MP Vs. 3.1 MP. 2MP is enough for phone camera. The BlackBerry 8520 has 2MP camera with 1600 x 1200 pixels. It also comes with QVGA that enables me to capture my best moments of life. To click good quality pictures I already have a proper camera. For 4 x 6” (10 x 15 cm) prints, a VGA camera (640 x 480 or 0.3 MP) resolution is good enough.

Display resolution: 8900 is much better. But 8520 is pretty good too. It's much better than my current phone and I never felt any problems with the current one. The screen size is fairly big. I do not intend to watch videos on it or I would have gone for something like the iPhone.

Trackpad: I love the trackpad of Blackberry 8520. This mobile phone comes well equipped with touch-sensitive optical trackpad along with music dedicated keys. It also supports QWERTY Keyboard that is useful for easy typing your messages.

RAM: 128 Vs. 256 - Both have the same processor (512) and without the 3G in either of them 128MB is more than enough to run any application. The BlackBerry 2520 also has 256 MB internal memory.  3G will probably take over a year to be rolled out and better phones would come out then. I will probably switch to a better version of Bold or Storm once that happens.

GPS: 8520 does not have GPS. Google maps triangulation has been good enough for me (not exact, but close enough). This feature will permit you to pinpoint your locations by triangulating between cell towers. I have just downloaded My Location app to my mobile phone and after that, it pinpointed me to within a block of my place. Have you tried this? You can search the map, get directions etc. Pretty much like a GPS Enabled Device.

Finish: 8900 has a better finish/is more stylish. But 8520 seemed sturdier to me. There are no chrome plated parts. Sides have rubber so the paint wont wear off from constant friction in the pocket. If dropped, the rubber side panel should absorb the impact better. 8520 is much cheaper and dropping it wont hurt me as much : )

If I was spending 26K I would spend a little more just get the bold which is actually better (3G, screen, processor). This is what I was planning to do, but new Blackberry bold and Blackberry storm are about to come. Their launch and getting a good deal on them would take a few months, SO I am buying this with the idea to replace it after a year if it is worth doing so.
By concluding, if you are not taking the iPhone, you should try the Blackberry 8520. I think it is excellent for its price as well as its features. Very little incremental benefit for the amount you pay on upgrading to the current 8900 or bold.

Blackberry Smart Phone 9630 - Bold & Beautiful

  blackberry 8830 Mobile Phones
Although India now has over millions of CDMA subscribers, yet these subscribers never had much of a choice when it came to high-end Smart Phones. Outdated versions of Windows Mobile smartphones have ruled the roost for a long time, till Reliance Communications (R-Com) has launched Blackberry services in Sept 2007, and with it, the Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone.

Let us consider the new Blackberry Tour 9630, the spiritual successor to the 8830 World Edition. This is a Hybrid phone that works on both CDMA and GSM networks and it is capable of roaming across the world, on any kind of network. Hence the name is Tour. This gadget also comes equipped with 3G on both CDMA (EVDO), and GSM (UMTS/HSPA), so the data speeds should be pretty good once 3G becomes widely available in India.

The Blackberry Tour 9630 is not a Dual SIM phone. This phone will be powered by a hybrid SIM card from Reliance Communication which is the exclusive retailer of the device in India.

The screen of this widget is attractive, sharp, and very easy to read in daylight as well as dark due to the auto light sensor. It runs the 4.7.x BlackBerry operating system, which features many improvements over the previous generation.

As far as form factor goes, it’s a BlackBerry 8900-size shell, with a BlackBerry Bold-like keyboard. The smaller size is obviously a major advantage, as the Bold can be quite a bother to carry, but cramming a Bold-style keyboard isn’t really the best thing for this form factor. It does not make for as a smooth a typing experience as the standard small keyboard on the Blackberry Curve or Blackberry 8900.

Feature-wise, A-GPS is included in the gadget, so you can easily run Google Maps, or for that matter, any other mapping / navigation software (MapMyIndia has navigation Software for BlackBerry phones). On the flip side, when it comes to connectivity, this phone lacks Wi-Fi support, which is very disappointing. Also, the Tour still uses the “Pearl”, the infamous Blackberry trackball that tends to get jammed with prolonged use.

The Blackberry Tour’s battery life also didn’t seem to be on par with its GSM brethren (about 3 hours of talk time and a day and a half of standby in our test).

Despite the bad parts, the Tour is still the best CDMA phone money can buy today.  Firstly, it is too expensive (Rs 27,990) for a phone with so few features. Secondly, the Blackberry Tour 9630 was launched in July 2009 in the US, and it has taken six months to get to India. In today’s smartphone market, so much changes in six months, that there are already reports of an updated Tour in the pipeline, with OS 5.0, Wi-Fi, and the Optical Trackpad.

If you’re searching for a good CDMA phone, and not necessarily a world roamer, you need to wait a few months, and the Curve 8530 should launch in India. This mobile phone has Wi-Fi, GPS, OS 5.0, does multimedia pretty well, and has that fancy Optical Trackpad as well (and should be priced around Rs 16-17,000).

More than any other factor, this phone suffers from poor launch timing. Blackberry should have launched the Tour six months earlier.

Tata Photon+ Vs. Reliance Netconnect : Check Out The Nation wide Survey

The High Speed Data Card technology also known as HSD rolls out under the flagship of Tata Indicom and Reliance. Data card, we can say, is any removable computer component that is approximately the size of a credit card. It is optimized for running rich media, heavy applications for e.g. video conferencing, video streaming, electronic surveillance, online multi-player gaming and heavy file transfers. On the other hand, Tata Photon Plus is a new Mobile Broadband Service that offers a great mobile Internet connectivity solution. Netconnect vs. Photon

One of the many ‘national’ experiments we will conduct is a coverage and speed contest between wireless broadband providers.
Naman will use the Reliance Netconnect Broadband+ and Alok will test the Tata Photon+. We will use the speed test tool available at Dslreports to check for speed.  The single transfer speed-test probes for maximum line speed, both upload and download. Almost everyday you will see images like the one below.

This is the result of a speed test conducted from Naman’s residence in south Mumbai. The download speed (in green) is 357 Kbps and the upload speed (in red) is 120 Kbps.
For network strength, we will rely on the service provider’s estimate indicated by the number of bars.

This is a first for India. Nobody has tested 2 national wireless internet service providers as comprehensively as this.

Connectindia: Finding a Suitable Broadband Internet Provider

Internet Broadband
Plans
Internet Broadband Plans

There are some vital aspects to be taken into consideration while deciding upon an appropriate Broadband Plan for your business. The most important aspect is the cost involved and the charges involved in setting up or installing an absolute plan to suit your company’s demands. You have to carefully go through the rules and regulations of an Internet service provider before you can make any mutual agreement. The type of service needed is another aspect wherein most businesses go in for a broadband Internet connection rather than a dial-up connection. This is due to the fact that dial-ups are not suitable for big organizations.

Reliability of service is very important because the network needs to be up and working 24X7. Another minor aspect which you need to consider is the excess data charges which an ISP would load on you in case of excessive usage. But if you select the right broadband plan tailor made for your business purposes, you would not have to worry about extra usage which may happen only occasionally.

Broadband Plans for a business range from anywhere between $80 to $120 per month depending on an ISP. Most of the broadband Internet providers ensure a congestion free network and 99.9% uptime service guarantee. Under the terms of the guarantee, you will be reimbursed for any downtime in the network.

The best part of it all is that all internal traffic within your network is free. Hence you don’t have to pay anything for communication within the company and data traffic between company sites. Intranet within your office employees can be designed to compliment business obligations and this will benefit your company immensely. It will also increase the productivity of your employees and all resources you have invested in.

A critical problem that may arise is that not all broadband plans are the same, and service providers will overload networks in order to maximize their profits. Therefore, it’s very important that you give much attention to the reliability aspect along with the costing. Some providers may even offer a free trial or a month money back guarantee.

For a business, you need to have a reliable Broadband Internet Connection instead of a dial-up. A dial-up connection maybe much cheaper but it is not as fast or reliable as a broadband connection. Moreover, there are additional charges involved like the cost of an extra phone, telephone bills for connecting to the Internet and extra data charges.

In the case of excessive use, it’s always better to overestimate the amount of data traffic within your organization. Since excess data charges vary according to your broadband plan, you may end up paying inflated overhead costs in a month. Security is also an issue when excess data charges apply to your account, and it is advisable to exercise caution and protect your computer from potential hackers who might want to use your account to access the internet.
